Esteeming Others
We are so valuable to God. And we are to see others as valuable to Him.
I was reading 1 Thessalonians 5 and was reminded of how we are to treat one another when I read verses 12 and 13. Let’s look at them.
And we beseech you, Brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you.
And to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. And be at peace among yourselves.
Do you see an order here? We are to know those who are around us. The Amplified Bible says that we are to recognize them for what they are, acknowledge and appreciate and respect them all. We are to also respect and honor and value those who are over us in the Lord---our leaders. Did you notice that there was no mention made about respecting them only if they agreed with you or you agreed with them? What if someone else’s doctrine is different than yours? Do you respect them? Yes. Now, I am talking about people who have accepted Jesus as their Savior. There are many beliefs among believers. We are to respect one another. There are scriptures that others interpret differently then I do. Why is that? We are all at different levels of maturity. As we grow in the Lord, our spiritual eyes are opened and we see more clearly than we did before. But that does not give us the right to condemn someone else because they don’t see things the way we do.
We are to hold others in high esteem and respect and honor them. We don’t hear as much about respect as we used to. I believe that it is time we studied it again and learned it. We are to be examples to the world in the way we conduct ourselves. Think about the difference you can make in someone else’s life by showing respect for them. Children need to show respect for their parents. Parents need to respect their children. Employees need to respect their employers and vice versa. Husbands and wives need to respect one another. In fact, Ephesians 5:23 addresses that very subject about loving and respecting one another. We are to respect those in authority over us. Respect indicates that we trust God to take care of us, even if that other person may not be doing much to be respected. Respect and honor releases God on our behalf.
Let’s all make an extra effort to show respect to those around us. I believe we will see a difference in our lives and experience more of God's best for us.
