Psalm 23, Part 3

Continuing Psalm 23 today we look at verse 5.

The Lord prepares a table before us in the presence of our enemies. What is on that table? All the bounty of heaven, all the abundance of the Lord; everything that God has is ours. He has given it to us. We have healing and health. We have prosperity of spirit, soul and body and finances. We have life more abundantly, His life, zoe. We have everything from our Father’s household.

He anoints our head with oil. This shows favor. We are highly favored of the Lord. He pours out His anointing on us to do what He asks us to do. In hot climates, when someone anointed His guest with oil, it was considered a mark of courtesy for the guest. The oil, mixed with perfume, was poured over the body. He anoints with oil from an overflowing cup, a cup overflowing with His Blessing. This oil had a wonderful fragrance and created an invigorating sensation on the skin. It had a cooling effect. Athletes were also anointed with oil to refresh them, give them vitality and get them ready for action. The Lord anoints us as His sheep to get us ready for action, for His service, doing His work as He directs us, fellowshipping with Him all the time. The anointing is the Holy Spirit Himself, the Lord of Love.

And finally let’s look at verse 6.
Surely, most assuredly, definitely, God’s goodness and His unfailing love, His agape hesed love, the love of the covenant will pursue us all the days of our lives, every day of our life. And we will dwell, live in the house of the Lord forever. His presence shall be our dwelling place. Psalm 91:1 We dwell in the secret place of the Most High God. 1 Corinthians 6:19,20 We are the temple of the Holy Spirit. He dwells in us as Love. He is Love. His nature is love. He is all love. That is all He is. So we are dwelling in Love Himself forever and He is dwelling in us forever.

This is good news for us. This psalm is one we need to take another look at. It is about living in the here and now, with the power of Almighty God operating through us. It is about resting in the Lord and in the Word of His covenant. It is about no worries or cares because our Good Shepherd is leading us and guiding us and feeding us. It is about a life without lack in any area of our lives. It is about trust and confidence in God’s provision for us in every area of our lives. He is a good God and a great provider. We can trust Him completely.

His goodness and unfailing love are following us everywhere we go. We have two constant companions. They are with us forever. They are following us. Isn’t that good news! Love never ever fails. And love is following us all the time. Goodness is the fullness of the essence of God, His nature. So, we could say that God is following us wherever we go, all the time. He is with us forever. The Word of God says that He will never leave us nor forsake us. We are His. He takes His care for us very seriously. He is our Father and He will do what He has to do to give us what we need and also what we want. He puts wants in us so that He can supply them. Always remember that He is following us forever. And we need to remind ourselves that we are well fed and provided for in a mighty way forever and ever and ever and ever. Focus on that for a period of time and watch your attitude change regarding your present situation. Yes, He is with us and surrounds us. What I want is to walk beside Him so that He doesn’t have to follow me. But He is simply reassuring us of His Presence when the statement is made that goodness and love (mercy) will follow us all the days of our lives.

What is it you need today? Look to your Good Shepherd. He has everything you need. Philippians tells us that my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory. In the glory there is no want. The glory is manifested as we spend time in His presence. He comes and rests upon us and in us and through us. He is waiting to make His presence known.
